Sound Making — The Voice of Rain

Also known as a rain wand or rain tube, the rain stick is an ancient ceremonial instrument used by the Indigenous peoples of South America to pray for rain. Its cascading sound, reminiscent of falling rain, was believed to move the heavens and bring forth nourishing water from the sky.

Traditionally, cactus spines were hammered into a dried cactus stem, which was then filled with small seeds or pebbles. When the stick was tilted or shaken, the seeds bounced against the spines, creating the soothing rhythm of rainfall—a sound used to summon rain and ward off drought.

There are countless variations in how rain sticks are made. In this workshop, we will use bamboo tubes filled with small stones or beans (such as red, mung, or soybeans). Nails or bamboo skewers can be inserted in spiral or random arrangements, piercing one or both sides of the bamboo. Each combination of materials and structure produces a unique timbre—a natural symphony of texture and rhythm.

Ears as Guides — Sound duaiyo

This workshop invites participants to awaken their intuitive sense of sound.
The body becomes the instrument, breath turns into melody, and the heartbeat sets the rhythm.
Moving together, we’ll listen to the sound between every inhale and exhale, allowing voices to flow freely through space.

Each participant will receive a mouth harp, a small but ancient instrument that opens the gateway to intuitive sound-making. Through improvisation and play, participants will discover their inner rhythm, creating spontaneous harmonies without any musical background.

Like yoga for the tongue, this workshop explores sound through playful curiosity.
In the embrace of nature, we will experience resonance between our voices and the environment, weaving a moment of shared beauty through sound, movement, and presence.
